Imagine being surrounded by family and friends for the evening. Music, laughter, crying, sharing stories, sharing food and drink, but most of all, being together. This is a Celtic funeral! Funerals and viewing today are not much different than of the past. Traditionally, the body would be laid out in the home for family and friends to visit and pay respects. Today, we have the body laid out in a casket at the funeral home. Viewing in the home allowed families to spend a lot of time with their loved one and like in the past, we allow families to spend as much time as they need just as if they were at home.
Another Celtic funeral tradition is the application of whiskey. In Irish, Whiskey is called "Uisce beatha" or "Water of life." A bottle and glass are placed by a picture with a lit candle and anyone who wishes may toast. A Celtic funeral wouldn't be the same with out having one last toast. After the viewing or wake, there is a formal service which would include pipes, a formal kilted lead, Staying of the sword, the ceremony and then dusting the casket. After the burial, perhaps a reception or gathering to keep your family close together.
